Dress Body: Tape four pieces of paper together to form a rectangle, 17″ x 22″. Draft a rectangle measuring 10″ x 19″. Along the top edge, measure 5-1/4″ from the left edge; make a mark. Along the right hand edge, measure up 14″; make a mark. Connect the two marks and add a 1/4″ seam allowance to the diagonal sleeve line.

Two years ago we were able to be involved in a project of sewing some pillowcase dresses for Little Dresses for Africa as part of a charity sew at our baby lock Common Events and it was such a good experience. We got to hear from the founder a woman who has now devoted her life to making and donating dresses for little girls all over the world who need a little love.

Fabric traditionally comes in 2 widths: 45 inches and 60 inches. These dresses are made from regular cotton fabric and is 45″ wide (knits are usually 60″). When the fabric is made, it's folded in half width-wise, with selveges matching, then wound around the bolt.

And these weren't just any ordinary pillowcase dresses, these were machine appliquéd, high-quality pillowcases sewn by some of the best women (and one man) in the industry. So here is a little closer view of the applique that we created for our pillowcase dresses.
